Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitor (24-hour blood pressure monitor)

Before telling you something about ABPM it’s significant to know about blood pressure and standard value.

What is blood pressure and blood pressure monitor: During the heart pump when blood is forced against the surface area called blood pressure. There are two points one is systolic and another one is diastolic. When the heart pumps and contracts its beat sends blood through vessels and increases blood pressure called systolic blood pressure. When the heart relaxes between beats the blood pressure decreases it’s called diastolic. For example, if blood pressure is 110/70mmhg. It recorded your systolic blood pressure of 110mmhg and diastolic blood pressure of 70mmhg. Normally people’s blood pressure is 120/80mmHg. 140mmHg/90mmHg is hypertension. And in which monitor you can see the blood pressure that is called blood pressure monitor.

Why blood pressure measurement is so important: By monitoring blood pressure we can know if someone has any hypertension and related heart disease that can lead to heart attacks, strokes, and heart failure. So, someone who monitors blood pressure can reduce the risk of these diseases. If the patient’s blood pressure is less than 140/90mmhg then the doctor can let him know that he can make his blood pressure lower than that by changing his lifestyle and doing exercise, eating less salt, less oil, and more eating fruits.

What is ABPM: Before knowing about ABPM we need to know that every 24 hours our blood pressure goes up and down. When we lie down our blood pressure goes down and when we do some activity our blood pressure goes up. This is how our blood pressure does not stay in the same state. Normally when the patient comes to the doctor, the doctor measures his pressure after he lies down or sits down this is one way but in ABPM we can get 24 different readings what was his 24-hour blood pressure which we can understand from its names.

Why people do ABPM tests: the first purpose of ABPM is for diagnosis purposes for example if any patient has hypertension or does not know this we do an ABPM test. 2nd we can use it as an improvement tool if there is a hypertension patient and we are giving him treatment to observe how improvement is happening. 3rd in someone in what time his blood pressure high and what time his blood pressure low in 24h for knowing this formula still we can use ABPM.

How to use it: Normally for ABPM we have a small machine and with this, we have a small cuff then the machine attaches to the cuff. Behind the machine, 2 small batteries set the machine to the requirements of the patient and then set the timing according to morning and night after the cuff has been tied to the arm The machine is kept in a pocket and should be given strict instruction to patients for not take off the machine in 24 hours so that 24 hours proper reading can come out on the machine. Then 24 hours of reading we can see on the computer.

What can we know from the ABPM report: 1st the most important we can get from ABPM is white coat hypertension. For example, if any patient comes to the hospital then because of anxiety the patient’s blood pressure gets higher than when he stays at home his blood pressure is normal but whenever comes to the hospital it gets high. 2nd Masked hypertension it,s the opposite of white-coat hypertension. Whenever a patient comes to the hospital his blood gets normal and then low otherwise whenever stays the patient’s blood is always high. 3rd is that for nocturnal dipping. Normally during sleep at night, our blood pressure should be low for example if in the daytime blood pressure is 120/80mm hg it should be 100/70mmhg at night but in nocturnal dipping blood pressure gets high and sometimes a heart attack happens then 4th we can know that is morning search for example after get up in the morning how fast our blood pressure gets high. This is how after the AMBP test we can monitor 24-hour blood pressure then we can know the condition of the patient’s body. Then we can treat the patient. With this, we can morning and night blood pressure readings.

Different Types of Blood Pressure Monitors: Recently there have been three types of blood pressure monitors most available Mercury sphygmomanometer, Aneroid sphygmomanometer, and Electronic sphygmomanometer.

Mercury sphygmomanometer: it has three parts cuff, pump, and reading column. In this machine blood pressure is measured by using mercury but recently the World Health Organization indicated that mercury is a poisonous metal so it, ‘s decreasing to use this type of machine.

Aneroid sphygmomanometer: Where cuff and pump are the same but the reading monitor is different looks like a watch whenever the doctor pumps, the monitor like clockwise just starts to move. So to use this machine need to take training. Using mercury and aneroid sphygmomanometer is not that easy at home so normally doctors do not recommend it because of the chance of error.

Electronic sphygmomanometer: in the last 5-6 years the most useable blood pressure monitor is the electronic sphygmomanometer. This machine also has one cuff and for pumping air in the cuff there is a small machine that can supply air and, on the display can see systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure. The most benefit is that this machine does not need to take training and can be used at home very easily. So recently most hospitals, clinics, and doctors have recommended electronic sphygmomanometers for use at home.
